HOLY FAMILY CATHEDRAL

PROCEDURES FOR THE PURIFICATION OF THE SACRED VESSELS

Immediately following Communion, the two Ministers of the Cup and the one Minister of the Bread scheduled to purify are to work together in purifying the Sacred Vessels.  If you are part of the team responsible for purifying, please be sure that all vessels except for the Presider’s Chalice are purified before leaving the Sacristy.  Thank you.

PURIFYING THE CUPS

1.       Pour a small amount of water (2 – 3 oz.) in the carafe and gently swirl making sure the water makes contact with all surfaces in the carafe

2.     Pour the water into one of the cups and repeat the gentle swirling motion

3.     Continue from one cup to the other leaving the final cup (Presider’s Chalice) for consumption.  This remaining Chalice is to be used to collect the Particles of the Body of Christ and water from the ciboria as well. (Please see #3 – PURIFYING THE CIBORIUM.)

4.     Once the consolidation has taken place, the Presider, Deacon or an instituted Acolyte is to consume the remaining water or pour it down the Segrarium.  (The Presider/Deacon/Instituted Acolyte will purify the Chalice after the completion of the Mass.)

5.     Wipe the cups with one of the purificators.

6.     Wash all the cups in warm soapy water and dry with the dishtowels located under the sink.

7.     Return all cups to the tray and put one clean purificator (located in the drawer marked – PURIFICATORS) for each cup on the tray in preparation for the next Mass. Towels for the tray are located in the far right drawer and are only replaced if the towel is soiled.

PURIFYING THE CIBORIUA

1.       Using a new purificator, gently wipe out any remaining Particles of the Body of Christ from each ciborium into one ciborium. Please be sure to include the large glass ciborium as well.

2.     Pour a small amount of water (2 – 3 oz.) into the large glass ciborium, which has already been wiped with the purificator, and swirl gently.  Then pour the water from ciborium to ciborium until the last ciborium is left containing the water and the Particles.

3.     The Minister is to consolidate the water and Particles from the last ciborium into the Chalice for consumption.  (Please see #3-PURIFYING THE CUPS) The Presider’s Chalice must be covered with a purificator or a pall then placed on the back counter on the corporal under the cross.

4.     Gently wipe each ciborium dry with a dishtowel located under the sink.

5.     Leave the ciboria on the main counter ready for the next Mass.
