MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Catholic community of Holy Family Cathedral, Orange inspired by the Holy Spirit, are called to live the message of Jesus Christ.   As an inclusive, culturally diverse, welcoming community we provide strong faith formation through our celebration of the Eucharist, Sacraments, Worship, Ministry and Evangelization.

A LETTER FROM THE RECTOR
Dear Sisters and Brothers:

In today's Gospel (Mk. 1:21ff), the Lord Jesus really wows the crowds. He is teaching in a new way. The content is different, and the method is too. There is something new here. "Look at this, he teaches with authority and not like our scribes!" Even the evil spirits can not resist the power and the message. "Be gone," He says in a liberating thunder!

The beauty of the story is the intimate bond between the man and the message. They are the same: He is the Word, and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. And in Him there would be no disconnect. He would preach what he practiced, and practice what was preached. And the Word would have it's effect.

Now think about what that means for today: His words of forgiveness, His promise of eternal life, His call to a holy and authentic life carry all the weight and authenticity that those folks in the synagogue at Capernaum saw too. And what a joy and a privilege it is for us, here and now, to proclaim it anew and celebrate it.

Your support and work allow that to happen. Thank you for that support, especially when sometimes it is not easy.

PSA is coming, so please continue your prayer. This week, consider praying about how that Word is still changing lives. And thank God for it!

Prayers and best wishes,

Rev. Msgr. Douglas Cook
Rector

BLESSING OF THE THROATS

FEAST OF ST. BLASE
BLESSING OF THE THROATS

St. Blase served as bishop of Armenia in the fourth century. Little is known about his life, but tradition tells us that he saved a small boy from choking on a fish bone. Because of this, his help is sought for those who are sick, especially those who are afflicted with illnesses of the throat. On February 3, the feast of Saint Blase, the church continues its ministry to the sick with the blessing of the throats. This blessing, which can take place either after the homily at Mass or as a part of a the Liturgy of the Word, invokes God’s healing and protection. Two blessed candles, joined in the form of a cross, are placed around the throat of each person seeking a blessing.

The blessing of the throats at the cathedral will take place during both the 8:15am Mass and the 12:10pm Mass.  There will be a special bilingual Mass at 7:00pm to accommodate our working parishioners. Msgr. Cook will be the celebrant at the 7:00pm Mass. Please join us!
